Millennium and sustainable development goals

The Millennium development goals or US millennium development goals are the set of 8 goals which agreed and signed by 189 member countries in a millennium summit held in New York during 6th to 8th September 2000.

Millennium development goals played very crucial role especially in backward countries, they were suffered from various types of social and economic problems.


Due to poverty backward countries people were suffered from hunger, low quality of medical facilities in those countries severely affected to children, maternal deaths, differences between male and female etc. All these factors where made the life of backward country very difficult. In order to eradicate these situation the UN member countries introduced these goals.These eight goals had set the target to achieve by 2015. 


The main aim of millennium development goals is to combat against poverty, illiteracy, providing the better health conditions to the peoples over entire world etc. MDG are interlinked with each other. It has 18 targets and 41 indicators.

1) Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

2) Achieve universal primary education

3)Promote gender equality

4) Reduce child mortality

5)Improve maternal health

6) combat against HIV AIDS malaria and other diseases

7) Ensure environmental sustainability

Achievements of Millennium development goals.

1) more than 1 billion people lifted out of extreme poverty

2) Reduced child mortality rate

3) HIV AIDS and other type of diseases fell down.

4) Rising the girls attendance ratio in  schools


SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS.

According to the Brundtland commission Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs is called sustainable development goals. According to this concept we have to fulfill the requirement of present people without harming of any natural resources which is required for future generation.


Sustainable development goals are the set of 17 global goals adopted in 2015 by 191 UN countries with achieving the target goals by 2030. The concept of sustainable development goals was born in UN National conference on sustainable development in Rio de Janeiro (Rio+20). On 25th September 2015 UN general assembly adopted a new development agenda called transforming world 2030 which come into force on 1st January 2016. SDG have 169 targets and 231 indicators.


It has 6 types of elements i.e people, planet prosperity, peace and justice, partnership and dignity. These 17 goals are based on millennium development goals by including some new areas like climate change, sustainable consumption, innovation etc. Sustainable development goals have three dimensions

1) Economic growth
2) Social inclusion
3) Environment protection

Difference between Millennium development goals and Sustainable development goals.

1) Millennium development goals are covered backward and  developing countries.

Sustainable development goals are covered all the countries of the world.

2) Millennium development goals are 8 goals with 18 targets and 41 indicators

Sustainable development goals have 17 goals with 169 targets and 231 indicators.

3) Millennium development goals have narrow scope.

Sustainable development goals have wide range.

4) Millennium development goal implementation period 2000 to 2015.

Sustainable development goals implemented in 2015 by achieving the target of 2030.
